Tulane Liberty Bowl Ring

Thought ya'll would get a kick out of this. Buddy of mine who played for Tulane back in the 70s came by and we were talking about the season coming up and then we got on the subject of his Tulane Liberty Bowl ring. Take a look at what is engraved at the bottom. Not the score of the Liberty Bowl, which they lost 9-5 to Penn State, admirably though. NO... The Tulane LSU score in that year where they beat the Tigers. You people think the Greenies aren't Obsessed with LSU, think again. It means everything to them.
He's a great guy, grew up a Tiger fan, wanted to come to LSU badly, and was supposed to, but got passed on at the last minute, and ended up going to the Greenies instead. I just found this fantastic that a school would put the LSU Tulane score on a bowl ring instead of the score of the bowl game, or nothing at all. Those crazy Greenies.

Back then it really was a rivalry. Not that LSU would have done that on a ring. But LSU and its fans cared much more too--even though they kicked TU's butts year in and year out (minus that 3 out of 4 year span). I miss the true "rivalry".

I do too. They had some pretty good ball clubs back then, and really competed in the 40s and 50s. Like I was telling him today, I think it's a real shame they left the SEC, and more so, demolished their campus stadium, which is I believe very important in achieving that college feel and support for the program

i don't think we'll ever be able to generate much student interest unless we have a stadium either on campus or within walking distance. bobby toledo is pushing for one, he mentioned the fly as a possible location but i don't think there's any way in hell they could ever get that worked out

I sat in the old stadium once or twice in my life. It was old, but still a structure to work with and rennovate. Sharing a stadium with a pro team when you just know they take a real back seat to them is just sad.

I think a stadium about the size of USM's (not sure of the capacity, but seems to be about 40,000) and in walking distance of campus would bode well for the program.

That sounds about right Tang. I think that would work just fine for starters, and then build upon that for the future.

Yeah. It's not like a smaller stadium woudl result in a loss of recruits and consistent 3-9, 4-8 and maybe a 5-7 seasons.
Seriously, it would be great.

That was a different time, Tulane-LSU was actually a rivalry back then which LSU dominated. Tulane was an independent back then, they lost the Liberty Bowl, their biggest win that year was that LSU game. They were excited for the win, that does not equal "obsession".

IMO,it still is a rivalry. I'm not one of those chest-beaters that says 'we never lose to them,they're nothing' 
I'm glad we're playing them again,as well as in basketball.
My class at LSU was 2-2 vs them. The 48-7 loss at the dome and the loss in '82 after the Orange Bowl announcement.
I still want to beat those jokers.

Tuck Fulane. We should not be playing these in-state schools that belong in I-AA ball. Nothing to gain from it. NOTHING.
Tulane is not a rivalry, will not be a rivalry in our lifetime. That ten year contract with them is nothing more than charity.

But playing behemoths like Troy,North Texas and Appy State richly enhance the program , right ?

you'd have to either be from the area or have lived here for a while to know what the fly is. it's a really nice area at the back of audubon park along the levy that's got a ton of green space. people have barbeques, walk their dogs, play football and volleyball, etc. which is why they will never be able to put a football stadium there. the uptown crowd would fight that tooth and nail

Actually, that was from 1973, which was the first time Tulane had beaten LSU since 1948. So I'd say it was definitely something for them to commemorate.
