BMI is imperfect if you're looking at one person because it doesn't take into account muscle mass. But it is very effective as a common standard when looking at very large populations because it's easy to obtain and consistent.

I'm a pretty muscular guy myself, when I was in the Navy every 6 months I had to get taped because according to the BMI chart I was overweight - though not obese.
