Hey OB, I'm about to buy a used boat and trailer in MS to be registered in LA.

I've done this with a truck, but never a boat/trailer.

The trailer was bought in MS, has never been titled, but is registered and current in MS.

Boat is registered in MS, no title.

I know I'm going to need:

1. Separate, notarized bills of sale for the hull and for the trailer.
2. Drivers license of the seller.
3. Seller told me he'll provide a copy of his bill of sale from when he bought everything.

Is this going to be a problem to get registered with DMV and LDWF? Also, how will I know if I have to submit the tax paperwork that the state says "May" be required?

thanks ob

This can’t be right.

You need a title to register a trailer and get a license plate for it. The trailer manufacturer gives a Certificate of Origin to the dealer who purchases it new, then the buyer gives that to the DMV and gets a title, registration and license plate. Do not pay him until you get a trailer title.

As for the boat, there are no boat titles in LA as far as I know. And no sales tax on used boats in LA either.

As I understand it, MS does not require trailer titles. They can be legally registered in MS without title, unless they were titled in another state before.

I could be wrong though!

Well you better get the Certificate of Origin from him then.

Otherwise you’ll have a hell of a time getting it registered in LA.
