Both will do the job. But as someone who has used both exclusively over the past 3 years. Unless its 250+ yds.. i wont take the 6.5 anymore. Way too many expansion issues, tried several different rounds, and closer range the 6.5 is just too hot. Too many hard trails, or lack of blood. I am not shitting on the 6.5, as i still use mine. But only for longer range. Cant go wrong with the 308. Plus ammo much more easy to find

I've never had a deer go more than 10 yards shooting the 140 Berger VLDH. Most have anchored where they were standing. That said, I did see what you describe with the 143 Hornady ELDX.
