It was one start. There was a time when Tiger fans would have been very happy with his stats for the day.
There was also a time LSU fans would have been very happy with a 7 win season. Point being, you have to judge people/things in the relevant time frame. In 2019 LSU completely changed its offensive approach. Thus, you have to compare him to now...not the pre-2018 "stone age".
Was he horrible? No. But he didn't look like a 4th year (albeit still inexperienced player). He looked incredibly hesitant all game. Even in his first start in 2018, Burrow looked confident and in control. His numbers weren't great (a big part of that is because of the, then, offensive approach), but he was throwing with confidence. There weren't double clutches and hitches. He let the ball fly. THAT is what was concerning about Brennan. Not so much the overall numbers.
Should Brennan's numbers have been enough to beat MSU if the defense had carried its weight? Maybe. But Brennan's play (and the offense) were a big part of why the defense was completely gassed in the 2nd half. LSU had 7 possessions in the first half. 6 of them were 5 plays or less. He only converted on one 3rd down...the Hail Mary from the 11 yard line that Gilbert pulled in.
Can he improve? You would certainly think so with more experience. But I think the onus is now on the offensive staff to help him with the play calling and approach. Burrow was deadly throwing crossing routes. Hell, he's razor sharp on those routes now in the NFL. Clearly Brennan is hesitant on those throws. Thus, as frustrating as it may sound for LSU fans, I think they have to go back to a little bit of the old style. No, now power I formation. But more of a power running approach (from the shotgun), with PA vertical routes. Even though he was still a bit hesitant, he did throw the deep ball well.
If the OC is going to ask him to run the "Joe Burrow" offense, then Brennan is going to fail. Tailor it to fit Brennan's strengths. That may be quick passes coupled with a power run game complemented by PA deep throws.

QB takes to long to decide when to throw it ! The offense line was sorry but u have to know when to throw it away!
