Truth be told i have no idea how FICA and the USD could ever be unraveled in a divorce.

I dont think of it like a balkan construct. More or less regions just start ignoring the central government. Breaking the currency and FICA glue will be hard though.

You can have that with stronger Federalism. The solution is here already within the form of government. You don't need a break-up to achieve that. What you need is an honest conversation about geopolitics, which, due to the US's wealth, has insulated the average US citizen from success and consequences in the geopolitical realm. The trend has been set, and governments with the right balance of centralized states with decentralized arrangements are going to dominate the 21st century. China is a de-facto federal state in many ways, namely in that the regions are somewhat decentralized by virtue of the CCP's desire to find talented people to fill its executive class (which is how Xi rose to power). India is another federal state, where one of its states, Uttar Pradesh, would be the 7th largest country in the world on population alone. China and India are predicted to be the largest economies in the world by 2050, and without good governance, the US stands to lose a lot.

The federal system allows for some limited government, but technology and how governments have used it has encouraged more and more centralization. The US has to operate under the reality of every country in the world, especially if people insist on continuing the process of Balkanization.
