It’s actually code as of the 2020 NEC (Louisiana is on 2014 code, so a while before it’s mandatory here). If you are in South Louisiana you should get at least 140kva protection. Nothing is going to help if lightening hits very near your house, but if you live somewhere with an aged electrical grid, it will definitely be worth it to protect against transient surges, and it will help protect against lighting that isn’t too close. For only a couple hundred, why not do it?
