It is an interesting dichotomy between the books and the movies. We all know the movie Denethor was grossly incompetent and uncaring.
In the books he's a superior military mind who wages a doomed, but brilliant, defense of the approaches to Minas Tirith and only cracks at the very end when the city walls are about to be breached and he believes he has lost both of his sons.
Don't get me wrong, it works much better to do it the way they did for the movie, it is just interesting the changes you make to a book to get the emotional beats that you need in a movie.
