you never addressed the question. Does a President lose the ability the nominate a Justice the day his second term begins if the opposition controls the Senate?

Was there a timeframe aspect in whatever precedent they looked to? As in "during the last month of lame duck Presidency" or "last two months...." etc?

Nope. The President can nominate right up to the last day in office. It's the check from the Senate that balances the move.
