Does a President lose the ability the nominate a Justice the day his second term begins if the opposition controls the Senate?

Was there a timeframe aspect in whatever precedent they looked to? As in "during the last month of lame duck Presidency" or "last two months...." etc?

Obama *did* nominate a Justice. Your quest seems to be moot.

Nope. The President can nominate right up to the last day in office. It's the check from the Senate that balances the move.
