Both Ole Miss and State regularly sold home games away for money from the late 70's-mid 90's. Ole Miss played "home" games in Memphis against Tennessee in 1980, 1990, and 1996. The last time State did this was with Florida in 1989(Tampa) and 1991(Orlando).

I feel like alternate home sites were big for lots of teams up until then. We all know about Arkansas playing in Little Rock and Jackson, MS being a site. In Texas, I want to say Texas Tech played someone like Baylor in the Cowboys old stadium, and I know the Alamodome hosted some SWC action.
