You don't have to be a soy boy to see how our own foreign policy aided the rise of Islamic fundamentalism in that part of the world. We funded the Mujahideen in their fight against the Soviets. We've given money to the Saudi's to build madrasas that radicalize Muslims in the Balkans, the Caucasus and Southeast Asia. We bought off Middle Eastern strongmen so they would recognize Israel, which caused massive resistance in their countries that was brutally suppressed and attributed to us.

At the end of the day, we didn't heed the advice of our Founding Fathers. We were arrogant enough to believe the rest of the world should be made in our image. A significant chunk of the Muslim world wants to live in the 8th century. No amount of American blood or treasure will change that and it damn sure ain't worth it to try.
