would be like if requiem for a dream skipped the 2nd half and just ran with the first part when herion made everything great and life was grand. then it ended. would that really be an indictment of using heroin?
i don’t think that’s a fair comparison - caveat that i haven’t seen the film - BUT I believe that the dance routine circulating that I saw was cut short. Apparently as the dance went on (and got worse) the crowd started to react with more shock, the main girl stops the act and leaves the stage in tears. The film ends with her wearing a very modest outfit and jumping rope.

I think overall the film has a good message but at the same time the visuals they use to deliver the message end up stepping all over the message.

ETA: How would Cuties compare to a movie like Kids? 11 year olds over sexualized in society and on screen vs 15-16 year olds engaging in overt sexual acts and drug use? Both movies had actors that were actually the same age as the characters they were portraying. 16 is obviously way different than 11 but full on overt sexual activity is also way different than suggestive dancing. BIG uproar around Kids back in the day.

As a thought exercise are these movies comparable just in a different generation facing different issues (HIV vs social media and over sexualizing young girls)?

I think Kids and requiem for a dream are good comparisons.

how do you criticize something in a movie without showing what you're critical of? that's the dilemma for cuties. One difference between cuties and kids is the pedophilia concern. What might disgust me, or any normal person, is a turn-on to others.

I think the major issue is how Netflix marketed the movie. the movie poster implies a glorification.
