We need a good punter. Not sure why we couldnt find a HS punter but so be it. Like the above post said. Punters and Kickers change games very quietly. They are those players you never really care about and never really notice until:

1) you need points
2) the kicker/punter you have is terrible

So if they coaches liked him enough to offer him. That works for me. I think they know more than anyone here what they need and when they need it. They also know their numbers and where they can and need to use them. Whats Miles record at LSU (enough said)

You're right. It's not the average, it's just that I think I saw "maybe" one punt over 40 yds in his film. I didn't read anywhere about his hang time. If you're right about this, then it answers "some" questions. And you're right, the kicking game IS vital!!! I think a lot of us are questioning the "choice" of punters. But, who the hell are WE to be questioning Les and his staff? That, you're also right about.

Fisher doesn't get enough credit for last year. There were many times he got us out of a jam, and never ever hurt us.

I hate to burn a scholarship on a punter but special teams and field position are very important elements to winning. Many are upset that this guy is a JUCO and will not have 4 years to play but he may be the best punter in the nation for this class.

6th Annual National Kicking and Snapping Spring Event
Finals Round Field Goal Champion: Jason Dann (2010) - Lake Highlands H.S. (TX)
Finals Round Punting Champion: Derek Helton (JC - 2009) - Fort Scott JC (KS)
Finals Round Snapping Champion: Robbie Horrell (2010) - Rancho Cucamonga H.S. (CA)

Let me try a different angle. Perhaps we screwed the pooch two years ago when we gave scholarships to TWO kickers that haven't contributed a damn thing yet. Don't know, i'm just a little on edge about the lack of scholarships that we have available, but I definitely agree with everyone about the importance of the kicking game.

Good pickup. Only problem I have is that we already have two kickers on scholly. That was a recruiting blunder by Miles, IMO. Give one out, fine but not two in the same class. I'm kinda hoping myself some dead weight gets cut off by attrition this year so we don't pass a guy like Sentimore up.

Here is the website with his profile which rates him as the #2 Punter. It claims he can kick 50+ yards and has a 4.8 - 5.2 sec hangtime. In his video he kicked a few from the back of the endzone to the opposite field 40-35 yard line. Of course these kicks were at a camp and not under pressure.

I don't think there is any question about that, it will happen. We are not going to have that many kickers on scholarship...and Jasper or Crutchfield need to be competing very hard. I think Jasper is going to go.

If that's true, it needs to happen before February!!!

It means he has 2 years of eligibility, and can redshirt one year if need be.

If hes working hard and doing everything he can, then I don't think he deserves to go. That's the coaching staff's fault for giving him the ship, you can't just screw a kid's education over because hes not performing how you want. Now if hes being lazy and not doing everything he can, then I don't mind seeing them take his ship for lack of work ethic. But I do agree with you, some more ships will probably be freed up this year. RP and Jones already got the boot, thats two extra ships there. We might be looking at a full class come around February.

Deuce

I agree with you. I hope we don't start that chit. I was hoping more like he'd get tired of being buried on the depth chart and would transfer somewhere else for more PT.

Even though Will Mahan(JUCO punter from CA) lost to Helton in the finals, this guys seems more consistent in punting well over 40 yards. Helton had the longest punts but a few of them fell short of 40 yards. If he improves his consistency, Helton will be a hell of a pick-up for LSU.
