Seems like they're preparing for future consoles that'll be more expensive.. basically a high end gaming PC.
Possibly taking a loss on the series X to get people into the Xbox ecosystem and prep them for making payments on future consoles.

That is absolutely what they're doing. It's smart on their part, but I'm totally cool with it because I was buying the system anyway.
ETA: Honestly, unless they're planning on releasing a new system every two years, I'm not sure I see the downside even from that perspective. I'm betting it won't be cheaper to finance future systems though.
