My read on Shelvin is that he’s taking the path of least resistance.

He isn’t concerned with putting in the work to be great. He just wants to collect that check and he’ll check out. Let that be a Warning to nfl teams.

The problem is, if that was really his goal, he could have put in one year of work to get potentially a first round contract with good guarantees. If he shows up to the combine out of shape, which wouldn't be surprising in the least given his history, there is no way he gets drafted there. Second round guarantees average about $3.7MM. Third round guarantees average about $950k. Once he takes out 5-10% for his agent, another 37% for federal income taxes, 4-10% for state income taxes depending on where he lands, and whoever else is one his payroll, that's leaves him with about 50% of the value of his contract. That's not enough money to just collect a check and check out. He'd have to figure out something else he can do to earn a living post-football. And for someone who struggled with grades and is leaving LSU without a degree, his options would be limited.

Now, if he played himself into a mid to late 1st round pick, we're talking about a range of $5-10 million in guarantees and $10-15 million in total contract value, and were he too invest/spend properly, he could get paid and sit on his arse the rest of his life.

So, from a financial standpoint, it was a very poor decision on his part to quit. All these guys allude to this being a business decision for their family. Well, there are also plenty of guys who make poor business decisions, and I believe Shelvin made a poor one.
