Any Chess players on the board? I did a search but didn't return anything.
I've always enjoyed playing purely recreationally with no effort ever put in to actually trying to improve an any meaningful way. Never researched tactics or practiced or anything.
I was thinking of signing up on either Chess.com or Lichess.org and actually attempting to improve my game past a beginner level. Any recommendation on which site would be better for a beginner? Which one has better training and practice?
Also any other recommendations as to resources to get better?
I'm not trying to become a pro or do some grueling training regimen or anything would just like to improve some and have fun with it.

Shredder is also a good app for your phone. You can’t play against anyone but it will tell you if you make a bad move (if you turn that option on) and it increases in difficulty to match your skill.

I like lichess better than chess.com.
Go through the lessons on strategy on the lichess to learn about pins and forks and skewers, etc. Learn basic strategy like controlling the center, developing pieces, getting your king safe, etc.
I used to split time between doing chess puzzles, playing the computer, and watching YouTube videos.
You can learn a lot more playing actual people though because beginner level computer engines make ridiculous blunders that not even the most beginner players would make so it's not that realistic.

I'd go with Lichess. It's free and the interface is way better imo.

Funny you ask this, I’ve gotten into it recently. My mom randomly bought me a set as a house warming gift several months back and my friends and I started playing it whenever they come over for beers. I started playing on the computer on my work down time and got to where I could beat the intermediate computer pretty easily. I had a buddy come over to watch nba playoffs the other day and we played a couple matches and he whooped me and kinda broke my spirits as I had just thought I was getting good lol. I need to pick myself up and keep practicing. Playing online vs in person is way different IMO

I was leaning Lichess so the responses have confirmed that. Guess I’ll sign up and give it a go.

I actually started on chess.com a couple of weeks ago, myself. The lessons were nice, but I really felt like grinding puzzles greatly helped with my pattern recognition and response. I haven’t tried the other sites, but I was satisfied.

I’m so ridiculously bad at chess that it has me worried my brain isn’t fully male (we’re supposed to have superior spatial skills).

Nah, while chess requires calculating several moves ahead first you have to learn which lines to actually calculate. You're probably just looking in the wrong places. It's easy to blunder big time when you're starting out.
When you look at the board ask yourself these questions both for your pieces but also your opponent:
- Can there be a check or checkmate next move?
- Are any pieces undefended?
- Are any pieces weak (only defended by one pawn or piece)?
- Are any pieces in danger of being forked?
- Which pieces are pinned?
When you're about to make a move ask yourself why you're playing that move.
Is it to make a threat the opponent cannot easily counter? Is it to win a piece? Is it to gain a positional advantage (i.e. controlling the center, forcing opponent to a weak square, stopping a threat, etc). Look to see if the move you are about to make is going to leave a piece undefended (or under-defended)
As you get better you'll learn to count the number of defenders and attackers to see if a piece or pawn can be won.
I was terrible at chess until I started learning actual strategy. I wouldn't bother with learning a lot of openings as they don't really teach you chess. Just learn 1 or two and stick to those for awhile.

I actually just started playing a shite ton over the last month and a half and I'm not sure why.
I'm surprised at all the people recommending Lichess though. I was on Chess.com so checked it out and I don't know how anyone can say Lichess' interface is better.
The lessons are free though right? You do have to pay for those after a certain amount on Chess.com

What is the best to play when I'm just trying to practice, or what do ya'll play most often?
Rapid 10+5 or 10+10? Or classic 30+0 or 30+20?

I blitz 3 +2 most of the time but I focus on 15 +10 when I have time.
