My Dad was a lifelong Democrat and would be horrorfied by what it has become. I attribute the beginning of the Democrat Party’s decline to the 1968 convention in Chicago. The moderates and conservatives were attacked by the leftists, leading to fights on the convention floor and in the streets of Chicago.

While the democrats’ old guard triumphed and held to the status quo and nominated the very moderate Hubert Humphrey, the Democrat Party was weakened and would never be the same. The GOP seized the opportunity and won with Richard Nixon, who would soon prove to be that party’s own Waterloo regarding the status quo.

The election of 1968 changed America profoundly. The Great Polarization had begun.
