Not the same problem, but we got a letter a couple of years ago saying we owed over $35,000 in back taxes, penalties. Somehow a 1099 for $680 was entered by the IRS as $68,000. I wrote a letter with copies of documentation attached. It took a while, but they cleared it up and acknowledged we didn’t owe the money. Was not fun to open that initial letter from them.

Same thing happened to me the one year I filed by mail. Some mongotard fat fingered a number. Always filed electronically after that.
