re: Was early 2000’s the greatest era of local band scene in BR?

Politics and raising the drinking age killed the scene of the pate 80’s/early 90’s. There was a big overreaction to someone getting trampled to death at a concert at the PMAC. The government’s response resulted in tours stopping in Lafayette, Biloxi, and New Orleans and skipping BR entirely.
I don’t know what caused the decline during the 2000’s, but the burning of the Caterie in 2010 followed by the closure of Chelseas in 2013 and the Spanish moon in 2017 all left original bands with a major shortage of venues. I think it was just changing consumer tastes. BR bar patrons want a cover band to provide background music for a tailgate atmosphere, so 80’s, 90’s, and pop country cover bands get the gigs.

Remember how popular superior grill on government was on Thursday nights in late 90’s and early 2000’s? There would be a good band playing most every week and it was always packed.

When I was playing with the original JT and The Gutter Sharks back in the late 80's... It was some of the best times for music..
The Caterie was forever packed... Even when we played at Sports, Fred's and Murphy's... It was some of the best crowds we played for...
We even had people come see us at Chris' Bar on North St...![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

It was the lack of kids forming bands in high school and then performing to get better. The few good bands in that time frame tried to make it and travelled the US. Nobody else filled their shoes and the crowds just went away.
I forget the Wed night cover band that would pack people in—mostly the shittiest people around, but it was packed. They were nothing special, but walked away with a decent amount of cash every week.
A decent cover band could play 5-8 sets a month and easily make $2k a month cash for each member. Decent side gig for your early 20s.
