if colleges had said back in June "we're not having football," they would have hemorrhaged attendance and donations.
You can extend this to in person attendance at school itself. As soon as there are outbreaks (which there will be) they'll send the kids home, put class online, and keep all that non-refundable tuition and housing money. If students had known well in advance they wouldn't be on campus this semester, not as many would have enrolled and none would have paid for dorms. Always follow the money.
