Should be in the same category as Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Stones, Dylan, and Elton.
This is a pretty significant shotgun blast here.
Dylan's only real talent is as a songwriter, but is one of the most influential who was not also a member of The Beatles in pop/rock music history.
Pink Floyd isn't really in the same category (other than each band experienced insane commercial success at approximately the same time, with at least 1 leader who was a bonifide terrible human being - in fact the Eagles had 2), musically. If you line them up - certainly Leadon/Felder/Walsh are all very comparable in talent to Gilmour as guitarists, and during the Eagles heyday, there were always 2 of them in the band. Henley probably a better singer than Gilmour, but Mason a better drummer than Henley. Frey was a great utility player, but the Eagles had nothing like Rick Wright - one of the most underrated rock piano/keyboard guys ever, ever.
Now the Fleetwood Mac comparison is more direct. They were competing for, largely, the same ears at exactly the same time. Broad-based, crossover pop/rock (and the Eagles were even grounded fairly heavily in country before Hotel California), heavily driven by radio friendly songs. Plus Stevie had affairs with both Henley and Walsh (as well as members of her own band). Virtually everyone in both bands could sing well and each band had, legitimately 3 lead singers on the roster, at the same time, during their heyday.
Elton is just much more comparable to Billy Joel or, even Warren Zevon. A singing piano player fronting a rock band is a relatively rare thing.
From a purely musical standpoint, Elton is head and shoulders more talented than Dylan or any members of the bands, possibly excepting David Gilmour.
But, folks who shite on the Eagles aren't doing it for musical reasons - I agree with you there. If there is a line of assault against them, it's either that Henley and Frey were awful human beings who treated their bandmates and employees like shite (which is relatively undeniable) or they were overproduced/too commerical, or what have you.
Man-for-man, particularly as a 5-piece with Felder (and either Bernie/Randy, Randy/Joe or even Joe/Tim), few American bands could come close to the talent level of the Eagles. You could count them on 1 hand, probably.
