"LSU's recruiting budget balloons over a decade," Baton Rouge Business Report's Daily Report, 7/28/08
quote:
LSU's spending for athletic recruitment jumped 248% over the past 10 years, placing it third among the five athletic programs with the biggest percentage increase in spending, according to an analysis by the Chronicle of Higher Education. LSU spent $994,200 in 2006-07 compared to $286,000 in 1996-97 to rank behind Maryland and Kansas State and ahead of Duke and West Virginia. Of the six Bowl Championship Series conferences, the SEC ranked first in recruitment spending at $13.1 million for 2006-07, a 98% increase over the 1996-97 figure of $6.6 million. The Chronicle reports that nearly half of the nation's biggest athletic programs doubled or tripled their spending over the past decade. The rising cost of travel is one cause, as coaches look farther afield than before—even to other continents—in recruiting top athletic talent in an increasingly competitive environment, according to the study.—Steve Clark

Yea, we also had more money pouring into the system, which gives you a bigger budget. Gotta spend money to make money.

Blurb "articles" such as this are often misleading. If the entire SEC spent 13.1 million, that is an average of 1.09 million per team, which is slightly more than the 994,000 LSU spent. Additionally, it is unlikely that schools such as Vanderbilt (no insult intended) are spending the same type of money. This likely means that other top SEC schools are spending much MORE than LSU. So instead of giving the impression that spending increases at LSU are "ballooning", a more in depth analysis is likey to reveal that LSU actually spends LESS than other top conference schools and the increase is part of a much larger national trend.
Lastly as another poster most wisely pointed out, "spending money to make money". BCS bowls do payout much more $$$$.

it doesn't matter how much we spend .. what matters is bottom-line and we are one of the most profiting football schools in the nation
