AC Thermostat reading wrong Temp

Woke up this morning the AC is on it’s blowing cold air which is great. It is set to Cold Auto and 78 degrees. The thermostat reading said 95 which is not great. It is no where near that hot.
The previous home owner did a small remodel and the thermostat is near the door leading to the garage and about three feet above the return air.
Is this thermostat broken, should it be moved or both? Thanks for any insight.
