Eric Church releasing a 28-song project this year

Should be interesting. I really really liked Desperate Man. Felt like he really got away from the bro-Country feel and back to a more raw sound. None of the songs on there make me wince, except maybe “Monsters”, buts that’s just more cheesy than anything.. I especially enjoyed “Hanginaround”. He is best with a funky rock feel.
Not sure what to make of the two singles he released off of it, they do seem a little cringey.
Still, I think he gets a bad rap on this board. His worst, cringiest, bro country songs are 10x better lyrically than anything Florida Georgia Line or Luke Bryan put out.

Lol at this board. You guys always get so salty when a good country musician gets discovered and becomes mainstream.
Y’all did it with Chris Stapleton too. This board was sucking him off a few years ago, but once he starts getting played on your local country station, you decide he’s “one of them bro country wannabes”.
My favorite country artists are Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers, and Church doesn’t come close to them, but I appreciate Eric Church for what he is. He’s a very good guitar player and vocalist, who can occasionally write dumb songs, but usually doesn’t.

Yep. That’s what I mean. Sometimes he just makes no sense.

Don't remember if it was the Super Bowl or what, but he played some big sporting event a few years back. That was possibly the worst half-time show I've seen, and there's a lot of stiff competition to earn that designation. If that was any indication of what his albums are like, yeah, every downvote is earned.

Zac Brown Band
Chris Stapleton
Eric Church
All of the above were highly lauded at one point and out of nowhere it seems they are now often maligned.

Zac Brown has fallen off IMO. His last album had some shitty tracks.
Church writes some really stupid shite, but he is also pretty talented. Record Year is a masterpiece of a song.
The Stapleton hate makes no sense. It’s just weird jealousy . “Wahhhhh I heard him on the radio so I can’t like him anymore :(“

His problem is he tries to play both sides. His first two albums, Sinners Like Me and Carolina, are much closer to an authentic country/rock mix. Then he realized he can make a shite ton more money by writing bro-country songs.
So now, he kind of does both. Desperate Man, Knives of New Orleans, Chattanooga Lucy, Heart Like a Wheel, and Record Year are some great authentic songs. Meanwhile, Drink in my Hand, Bad Mother Trucker, Homeboy, These Boots, and shite like that is just shite he does to make money. Check out his old stuff and you can tell he prefers real country music.

Eric Church does get a lot of unfair hate, but a lot of it is fair.
After he got popular he fell into the Toby Keith trap.
Keith is capable of good music and put out a lot good music. Then he got real popular and for some reason just started releasing whatever songs he came up with, without making sure they were good songs. Because hey, he's Toby Keith and people should like it.
Church does the same thing. It's why Sinners Like Me was a pretty solid album all around. A lot of work went into getting that first album together. Then subsequent albums got more and more sub-par.

1000% agree with this post. I still think he has some decent songs though. Anytime you change your music style that dramatically, you’re chasing the money.

I do really like Wrecking Ball.

I think where he shines is live performances. Not some sporting event pregame or halftime show, but a full concert. I found a spotify playlist of his live stuff, and most of it is good. He's got some great backup vocalists, a good band, and they play tons of covers as well as all of his original stuff.
