5 is fine and actually provides a nice convenient stopping point if you have the desire and/or willpower to do such a thing. 6 is a notch down and borders on meh, 7 is bad, and 8 is insulting garbage.

1-4 are excellent and 4 is elite. 4 is one of the best single seasons of any show I've seen.

This. I love 1-2. 3 is find but not as good as the first 2. I'm with you that in terms of just a stand alone season Season 4 of Dexter is arguable one of the GOATs - the amount of insane, mind-blowing, but well-placed twists is incredible.

ETA: Apparently showrunner Clyde Phillips left after season 4 and it shows. I won't spoil it but anyone who doesn't know should look up how he wanted the series to end. It is miles, miles better than what actually took place.
