Civilian contractor on a military facility may be a better option.

"42 year old alcoholic divorced father of 3 enlists" sounds like the plot to bad comedy (I may have just made up some details about your life).

For reference:

When I got out of the Navy, I was "old" and "experienced". There were others on the submarine older than me, but I was in the top 20% or so in the age distribution curve.

Then, I got out, went to college, and celebrated my 26th Birthday later that year.

At 38 - Enlisted people start retiring (signed up at 18 and served 20), and most do not re-enlist which skews the age distribution much, much younger.

At 42 - Officers start retiring (Commissioned at 22 and serving 20).

My BIL works at an installation Kurdistan, most of the guys/girls are retired military. When Covid hit they were going to send everybody over 50 home until they figured out there wouldn't be enough people left to keep the place running.
