Doesn't matter where he was running to.
He was running.
If he was a real patriot he would have exposed the program and stood up to the government and let the chips fall.
Instead he corroborated with foreign governments.

If he hadn't run you would've never known his name. He would've been vanished and prevented from ever telling his side of the story. Instead the intelligence world would've made him out to be some crazy pedo (or worse) and totally discredited him before his story ever made it to print. That's what they do. They still tried but because he was able to counter it they failed.
