Doesn't matter where he was running to.
He was running.
If he was a real patriot he would have exposed the program and stood up to the government and let the chips fall.
Instead he corroborated with foreign governments.

He could have flown direct to Ecuador from Hong Kong. He went through Russia because that was where he wanted to be. Ask yourself why he would go through Russia when he much more easily could have gone direct from Hong Kong.
