West Cove boat launch

Only fished Big Lake once years ago and launched out of Spicers. I found the West Cove launch on Google Earth yesterday, is this a viable option for a 22’ bay boat? Anything to look out for? Thx in advance.

I believe it closes early like at 3 or maybe 5, other than that your good to go.

quote:The entrance to west cove can get shallow on low tide so just stay on step when going through the crab trap maze.
Anything to look out for?

Haven’t seen gates locked at WC in years, should be fine until dark coming out.

Thinking about going to big lake for the first time Friday. Any tips?

Yes it’s fine for a boat that size. I used to launch my 21’ bay boat there regularly.
The only trouble I’ve ever had was on an incoming tide and an east wind. The locks are near the launch on the west side and as soon as I backed off the trailer, the current and wind immediately started pushing me into the locks. Had to reverse it out of there quickly as the wind wouldn’t allow me to turn into it.
Like someone else mentioned, there’s a damn ton of crab traps at the mouth of the canal to get into West Cove. Some good spots to fish in West Cove though.

SW wind predicted at Cameron 10-14 on Friday with a predicted incoming tide. I would get some live bait and camp out on the channel. Launch at Cal Pt or Spicers and make the run south. Coming back fish the rocks from Joes Cove north on either side.
If that doesn't work hit the west bank of the lake fishing Turners south to Long Point.
