If you want to stay in the "affordable" range but still want a good grill, I would suggest a Weber. They start at $299 for the little one with no side burner.
I am on my second cheap grill and I will never go that route again.

I am in the market right now to, the $500 range. (it is a gift) Figured waiting till the end of this month, beginning of August, I could get some on sale and stretch my dollar.

I have a a Weber right now, won it actually. It is a great gas grill (2 burner I think). Want to upgrade with my new one.

along the same lines.....has anyone used an infrared grill?

I don't have a pit with one, but I have used one before. mainly for searing the meat, or for rotisserie purposes. Great for making gyros.

Stick with charcoal
I think it is important to have both. My charcoal one is mainly used on the weekends when I have time to prepare it and really get the flavor. The gas one is used during the week when time is at a premium and I dont have a whole night waiting on coals.

I have an infrared grill and it's great for steaks, pork chops, and chicken. Everything else goes to the coals

Yeah, I can see that. And I was just playing around. I'm not going to begrudge anyone their own tastes and methods (unless they're doing something REALLY asinine). I'm a charcoal only guy. If I don't have time to fire up the charcoal chimney and grill it in the Weber, I'll wait until I have the time.

Same here. I actually use my propane grill more than i use the stove/oven inside.

especially in this heat. no need turning that oven on inside and making the a/c work harder than it already does.
