The HM40 was the first low torque shaft I remember, and when Olazabal won the Masters with it it really took off. The gold paint was a master marketing move on Aldila's part

When I first got to Houston there was a guy that owned the Golf & Tennis stores.

His store on Westheimer employed 2 guys and all that they did all day was take apart steel shafted TaylorMade Tour Preffered drivers and install the gold HM40 shafts, he then ship them to Japan for triple the price back then.

The swingweights were all over the place, couldn't control them at all.

Those were crazy days back then. Armour 692 woods were going for $1,000 to $1,500 a set, Scottsdale Ansers were 2K, and if you had a George Low Sportsmans Park Wizard you could just about buy a new car. I never could understand the Japanese frenzy for buying that stuff.
