My guess is they write for money, and at some point, you've made enough money.

GRRM has a net worth of $65 million. I don't think ASOIF was his masterpiece or his life's work or the capstone to his career. I think it was paying the bills, and then GOT paid all the rest of the bills he'll have for the rest of his life, ergo there is no need to untie the Gordian knots of ASOIF at all, let alone in a sufficiently pleasing way to his fans.

Rothfuss has earned much less (maybe $3-4 million) but maybe the income line he needed to cross was much shorter than GRRM.
