When was your last trip down?
2016. Currently planning to be down there for Thanksgiving this year assuming the travel restrictions are lifted. There are currently no flights going into the country and American Airlines has extended their suspension through July. A friend of mine from Florida operates a surf charter company near Popoyo. I talk to him at least twice a month and I stay pretty updated with what's actually going on down there.
Even when the Ortega protests were going on, the coastal communities were isolated from all of that.
eta: some photos from the last time we were there. It was mainly a surf trip but we got some fishing in too.
Also, funny story about that trip. We had two guys with us who had never met each other before the trip. I was their mutual friend. So we get overbooked in Dallas or whatever airport we left the states from. They wind up staying together while the rest of us (like 4 of us) go ahead down. We landed in Managua midday and then had the ~3 hour bus ride from Managua to Rivas. Problem: the airline lost our boardbags (like 7 surfboards in 2 bags), and the primary purpose of this trip was a surf trip. Airline says our boards will be there later that night, but before our friends get there. So we get in touch with our overbooked friends, tell them the situation, and they say they'll get the boards whenever they land.
They wind up not getting there until like 10pm. By that time, we were good and drunk in SJDS. They go to the baggage people to figure out where our surfboards are, and wind up walking like a mile away from the airport with "airport security" at like 11pm to some sketchy warehouse in the middle of Managua to get our surfboards. They made it alright, but didn't get to where we were until like 3am. All's well that ends well I guess .
