Surface Drives

Looking at rigging out an aluminum boat I acquired with one for duck season. We go into some pretty hairy stuff. The guy I normally go with has a long tail and he says they have there plus and minuses. He’d go with surface drive if he did all over again.
What to look for on a used one? Brands to stay away from? Build my own with mud skipper kit and Honda?
Edit: Pushing a 16x48 duracraft

I'm a Gatortail fan. It's really them or Prodrive if you want something with reverse.

Gatortail fan here also, I prefer the instant reverse for fishing and frogging, plus I find the gatortail is a little faster on top end. But if you are in some real nasty mud often, then the Prodrive might be better suited with the full power reverse.
Both gatortail and Prodrive will let you test drive if you call them and set it up.

I've been in some nasty mud with my GTR. Never got stuck. You have to know how to work the engine. I agree that the instant reverse > full reverse. And the new GTR reverse is way better than it used to be.

Tke, speck...I’m trying to ball on a budget here lol
I would love to spend $8-10k on one, but can’t do that. Im going to be going the used route. Any models to avoid? What to look for?

Problem is you and everyone else is looking for that deal. If you find one you might not have the luxury of being too picky. I want a small one with reverse to run the river and they’re hard to come by.
