What happened to the failed study on Remdesivir last week?

Side effects of RDV: Liver damage, nausea and vomiting.
On the flopped test, experts say having symptoms for 12 days before getting remdesvir isn't optimal and getting it as soon as you are diagnosed increases the chances of it being successuful. Wait, isn't that the same case for HCQ? The VA study only gave HCQ to patients who were already intubated, and at that point, the mortality rate is high.
