What is the grilling surface area?

If you take both upper grates and put them on the same level, it's a full 560"

Also, is the heat distribution pretty even from top rack to the grill grate?

I smoked some chicken breast on the main grate and a pork loin on the upper. I haven't noticed any difference in temp between the 2 racks.

How would rate its searing and general grilling capabilities compared to a regular charcoal grill?

It will certainly sear the hell out of a steak. I've set it to 700 and it blew right past that and topped out at 762.

Grills just fine to me, at temps below 500 degrees the fan is still functional so even with the lid open it will attempt to maintain temp.
