How do you guys get a good cast out of something that has no weight to it? Like if you take a hook and a worm and I think they call it a "wacky worm" basically put the hook in the middle and let it sink on its own..... Its so light I get back lash all the freaking time

Depending on cover I like to use a spinning rod and a 1 1/2 to 2' leader between the fluke and a barrel swivel.

With baitcasting it helps to have a med weight topwater rod witha fast-xtra-fast tip and 12# flourocarbon on a smaller diameter spool baitcaster. Still want some backbone for driving the hook, but the tip is what allows a longer cast.

Of course fishing a weightless fluke, unless it's a heavier brand, is always going to cause some sacrifice in casting distance....at least the way i set my reels.

Others may know a more efficient way, but this is what usually works for me....obviously depending on how heavy the cover is.

Lighter line and more practice, or a spinning reel.

If you don’t fish senkos/sticks baits start there. They flat out get bit. Start wacky and Texas rigged and build from there. If I’m having a tough day fishing I can go to a senko and start catching.

Same for me with a fluke or floating trick worm. If the fish are deeper I’ll add a spit shot just ahead of the swivel.

Bass

I’ve caught three around this size over there. 2 on the other side of the bridge and one exactly where you were talking.. that’s some good info and I’ll try what you said. I appreciate it and that’s a nice un you got there

Glad to help. Live in Ft Inn now so don't get a chance to get up to Cunningham as much as I used to but I always liked it.

FWIW she's still in the lake and that was a few years back so tight lines.

Probably can't get any because of the shutdown but nothing catches the bass like live bait. Get some shiners and you'll be good to go.

When all else fails, throw a zoom fluke and fish it just subsurface.

Bass eat baitfish. Bass that aren't hungry will still eat a wounded baitfish, and that's what it mimics. Flukes will catch fish that otherwise wouldn't bite, and 9/10 times if they're biting then they'll hit a fluke

ETA: I see the fluke has already been covered ITT

Depend man.
If they are hitting shad on top I know at least some are biting going up.
I will use topwater, stickbaits, spinnerbaits, shallow water cranks, flukes, swim jigs.

If they are not hitting much on top they could be tight to cover or feeding on the bottom. I will go with worms, crawl type plastics, deepwater cranks or mid diving cranks to bump the bottom, jigs, etc.

This is the key to throwing weightless plastics a long way. And a smooth reel with smaller diameter line. I throw everything on 40lb Suffix 832 braid which casts like a dream. I also leave about a foot of line off the rod tip to help with casting. 30-40yd casts are very doable with this setup.
