went to a final 4. Yes. Teams turned down the NCAA to go to the NIT in those days and it was a HUGE deal.

The label stuck and over time, it became euphemistically branded as the ‘consolation’ tournament.


The NCAA was already being considered the more prestigious tourney by the time Pistol played in Baton Rouge.
