if 1/4 of the school year isn't important, then what the frick are we doing, exactly?

It's a question worth asking

I'm afraid the answer is somewhere between:

1. We've always done it that way (which is the worst reason to continue to do anything, IMO.)

2. Free daycare and lunches!
