F150 ac

Need guidance on ordering replacement parts to rebuild ac in 2010 f150. Dealership said leak in dash 3 years ago and I didn’t want to spend $2k + at that time. Son driving now and don’t want him to do second summer without cold air. Need best place to order from, have guy to install $850 cash. He says it’s a two day job so labor doesn’t seem out of line.

Seems suspect. Did they remove dash in order to see dye leak behind it? Or is it just their best guess? FTR, I am no expert. But its like a 10-14 hr by the book job to remove and install dash

run some die, find the leak, replace or have THAT one part replaced, pull vacuum, charge with Freon and oil and roll out.

I believe they did dye and couldn’t find anything so chalked up to behind dash. My shade tree charged and it blew out of compressor 5 min later.

Most reputable shops also use a Freon “sniffer” for evaporator coil or areas that aren’t readily visible. I’d pay someone $850 to do an evaporator in a heartbeat, and I’m a former tech and shop owner. Dash work will have your hands looking like you knuckle-checked a strand of barbed-wire.

If it's blowing freon out of the compressor then I'd say you found your leak

Ford and GM both ought to be run out of business over this issue - probably dodge also but I am not familiar with them.
I was able to replace mine in my Tahoe without removing the dash but it required some judicial use of a finishing grinder and some fabrication to replace the pieces cut out but when done it couldn't be seen and the dash was as sound as the day it came from the factory....and the next time it needs replacing, and it will, it can be removed in about an hour.
There is a method to their madness....a lot of consumers will buy a new vehicle instead of forking over the $2000+ to replace a $100 part. Given that most of them fail at about 7 years or so its about time that most people are thinking about a new one anyway, especially among buyers who don't buy a new one every 2-3 years.
I know it isn't a popular idea but I drove that Tahoe for 2 years in New Mexico without AC and never really missed it. It wasn't as nice as having AC but most of the trips made in the vehicle were either short commutes where the AC wouldn't have cooled the vehicle any way OR long road trips where traffic was non existent. Admittedly the humidty in New Mexico is non existent but it wasn't nearly the nightmare my family made it out to be. I still run around town with the windows down and the AC off about as much as I don't. I was about 26 years old before I had a vehicle with AC anyway....in Georgia with humidity...and I survived.

Rockauto $300
Labor $850
Thinking that would be double at dealership and maybe $500 at ac shop in town. The boy is going to get cold air for his birthday and appreciate it.
Second the run out of town comment, way too many Ford ac failures.

I have the driver side actuator out on my f150. $25 part, $1400 job at any shop. You can supposedly get a small hand to reach into the spot it is without entire dash removal. I am trying to convince the wife to help during the quarantine

I just went through this with my 2010 F150. It was $1,800 from a shop that I trust. Also, there is an issue with a fuse box or relay that needs to be moved in order to keep it from tripping. Get them to fix that too or it will leave you on the side of the road one day. I love my 2010, it has 230k on it. I'm driving it forever, frick spending 40k on a new one

My guy called me after I ordered parts to make sure I got the heater core. He knows what he is doing, came as a referral from neighbor. Tail light warranty though.

There are videos on you tube on changing the actuators. Be patient and get the right tools. I did mine in 45 minutes. Pull radio and glove box and root hog.
