The safeties are needed due to low numbers the last couple years. (LSU seems to periodically sign a big block of safeties or corners that distorts the depth chart.) LSU
I don't see how the 4 WDE are excusable.
I tried laying out the roster depth in a spreadsheet and thought we were really low in Safeties and Cornerbacks relative to their need in actual play. I think the WR Depth is a little short ( especially with opt outs).
I felt we could squeeze in 4 OL. We are short in a number of positions due to attrition, but what I thought we needed was something like the following:
Target:
4 QB, 4 RB, 4 TE/FB, 15 OL, 11 WR => 38
8 DT, 8 DE, 10 LB, 8 S, 9 CB => 43
1 PK, 1 Punter, 1 KO, 1 snapper => 4
roster total 38 + 43 + 4 = 85
2021 class:
1 QB, 4 WR, 4 OL, 1 TE => 10
5 DL, 3 LB, 4 S, 2 CB => 14
1 punter
10 + 14 + 1 = 25 => max new counters
The real issues are the 25 annual limit and the high attrition from the team. A QB and a RB each year are a good idea due to attrition and injury risks. LB are valuable on special teams. Given that we use 5 or 6 DB most of the time, I think 15+ DB are needed for development, special teams, and depth.

Orgeron said as much recently. One thing that is overlooked in recruiting is roster management and LSU hasn’t been up to par since before BeBe.
we had depth issues at Dline under Les, didn’t sign a QB in 2018 under O, and now have to find SEC caliber Offensive linemen late in the game this year. all obvious examples of mismanagement to me.
