The "powers that be" make sure that the majority opinion on an issue lays down to the minority religious voters, at least in my county. We've gone through a couple of alcohol-related county referendums and, damndest thing, every one of them is scheduled to take place during an off-year election (odd-numbered years). There will be some minor voting day in the springtime that no one seems to know about (no local paper here) unless you're in a church where they make damn sure you know to go vote.

This isn't what happens at the state level, but our local folks are shady as frick.
