Also, are we to believe that everything we saw was through the lense of the camera or was it only viewed that way and written into the story when convenient.

Similar to parks and rec with the cutaways and interviews.

For example. The final episode was outside the documentary filming. How are we seeing it?

It was bonus content for the DVDs. Either Dwight said this or someone off screen said it to Dwight.

Well, Parks and Rec and Modern Family clearly just use the mockumentary device as a quasi-4th wall-breaking narrative tool.

The Office, however, is supposed to be actually captured by a doc crew.

This thread hasn't helped me to a better understanding at all.
