This was a pretty dickish response to a reasonable question. Most companies give you an idea of your projected career path. Doesn’t sound like he was asking for a promotion.

Agree - promotion is one thing but career path is another. Most decent companies/supervisors will provide you with a career path. If they cant, then there is a problem. Working hard and following that path is on you. Unfortunately or fortunately, sometimes the path is out the door.
