Live acting is always cringey, basically no matter what. Hell besides someone like Daniel Day Lewis who would probably actually cut himself if he were acting as if he were stabbed, nearly any actor alive in an on-the-spot crying exercise live on a sport center set would look extremely terrible and ackward.
Anyone ever seen those behind the scenes clips of movies when they're just being filmed by a production assistant for a DVD extra?
They all seem fake and terrible.
It just goes to show how incredibly important pro framing, lighting, angles, lenses, equipment, editing and music are to making a cinematic experience.

Eh not always. Jim Carrey did an interview recently and went into Grinch mode for a few seconds and it was pretty flawless.
