Idea of being 46 and an empty nester is awesome to me.
We emptied the nest at 44. It's the greatest thing ever. Having kids early is hard, but the payoff is worth it IMO
We became partial empty nesters last year in August year when out last started college and I just turned 49, we still have 2 in college which is why I said partial empty nesters as they still come home and we're still paying for their school and most expenses.
Your point still stands it's pretty great to know that before I'm 55 we'll be fully empty nesters . Sure it's still a little sad but we're adjusting and really starting to be able to enjoy the newly found freedom.

Not me brother! My wife and I had our first at 22. Second at 24.
While the rest of our college friends were partying it up and going on all these great trips, we were working our asses off trying to figure shite out. It was rough. My wife and I put a lot of effort into raising the kids and neglected other aspects of our lives. Career was one area that I neglected significantly. My dad traveled a lot when I was growing up. He never made my games, etc, etc, etc. I promised to never do that which limited my options career wise.
With the kids gone, I'm going back to get my MBA. I still have time to make a career with 20 years left. It's nice to be able to go on vacations whenever we want. It's nice to be able to go out to eat without worrying about babysitters or what the kids are eating. It'll be even more fun when our friends catch up with us.
