I felt the same way after I watched it. Didn’t know who Sharon Tate was or much about the Mason murders.
So I was like wtf is going on in this badass movie.
Googled “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Explained” and watched a YouTube video on it. Made a whole lot of sense after. So then I watched it again and loved it again.

This is a problem - if you're clued into all that from a historical standpoint, the Manson murders hang over the entire film like an unseen character. The ending has 1000x the impact in my opinion if you're aware of what actually happened.
If you went into the film knowing little to nothing about the Manson Family, then I don't see how the film has anything like the impact intended.
