Well, maybe I'm not up to speed. When my kids had a sandbox when they were younger, I used masonry sand because someone told me it was sterile & weeds would not grow in it. That was true in my case. The sand was 4-6 inches deep and did not support plant life.
Maybe a thinner layer incorporates better into the natural soil.
