Joseph Bartholomew
Interesting read about Bartholomew. He was quite the entrepreneur.

Since 1851, many remarkable black men and women did not receive obituaries in The New York Times. This month, with Overlooked, we’re adding their stories to our archives.

NYT glossed over the design being a Raynor. Seems important. It's like it was intentionally vague to allow you to think he designed it.
Did anyone else read it that way?

Uhhh yea, he didn’t build MCC, Seth Raynor did.
No doubt JB had a big impact on the city and black golfers though.

Literally just listened to a podcast focusing on Raynor this morning with the head of the Raynor Society and they confirmed MCC is a Raynor design and he worked with Bartholomew because the members were adamant they wanted Bartholomew to be the construction superintendent of Raynor's design and sent him to travel and work with Raynor prior to construction. But Raynor designed, visited and oversaw it.

Ended up emailing him about the MCC rebuild to see what he thought, he is very excited about it. Said the guy in charge is great.

What is MCC doing for the redesign?
Posted on 2/13/20 at 10:47 am to The Johnny Lawrence
Fixing drainage for sure. But I’ve heard it’s going back to raynor original design and then I’ve heard it’s a complete redo. So I’m not positive. He didn’t give any specifics

They rolled out the golf plan this week, but I wasn't there. Previously I had heard two things which was try to go back to the original raynor design and the other was remodel with the addition of more trees etc. Looking forward to hopefully finding out the details this weekend.

What did they lose from the original design that they are trying to bring back?

With the resurgence of respect for golden-era architecture, I would have been shocked if this wasn’t the case. I’m excited to play there once it’s done. My only hope is they hire a competent superintendent that can make MCC one of the premier clubs in the state.

The course has been redesigned several times since it was built in 1922-1923. As it stands now, there are very little "Raynor" characteristics. The holes are still named after the templates or "ideal holes," but they mostly miss the mark when compared to other Raynor courses. The master plan rectifies that in a big way.

That’s impossible

What course can I look at hole by hole to get an idea of what Raynor designs are supposed to look like?
