I think it has more to do with being shocked than truly upset. You don't expect to hear about a 41 y/o that you have seen on TV for the last 23 years dying unless they were sick. Its only amplified when you find out he teenage daughter with him because you start thinking about what would be going through your mind if you were in that situation.
For those that are truly upset and crying baffle me as well. But, I also know I handle death very different than just about everyone I know.
